Postal Service Unveils James Dean Stamp
NEW YORK (AP) _ The Postal Service is memorializing leather jackets, drive-ins and ``living on the edge.″
Postmaster General Marvin Runyon unveiled the new James Dean stamp at a ceremony Wednesday at the Planet Hollywood restaurant.
The stamp, which goes on sale in June, is the second in the Postal Service’s ``Legends of Hollywood″ series. The first was 1995′s Marilyn Monroe stamp.
The new stamp depicts a somber Dean with his trademark tousled hair and sideburns.
Dean appeared in ``East of Eden″ (1955) and ``Giant″ (1956) but his image was set with his portrayal of the brooding teen-ager Jim Stark in 1955′s ``Rebel Without a Cause.″
``Even today, his very name stirs up powerful memories of leather jackets, diners and drive-ins, and living on the edge,″ Runyon said.
Dean was killed in 1955 when his silver Porsche crashed into another car at a rural crossroad in California. He was 24.
