Find your way to state rep forums

September 25, 2018

Last week, this space was used to lament the nasty tone of the local state representative race between incumbent Lindsay Parkhurst and former office holder Lisa Dugan.

There was a line in the editorial that encouraged voters to learn more about the candidates than what a negative campaign mailing can provide. Among the ways to gain information is to attend candidate forums.

At the time of that writing, the existence of two public forums were not widely known, but that has since changed.

From 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday night at the Kankakee Civic Auditorium, Republican Parkhurst and Democrat Dugan will participate in a forum co-sponsored by Kankakee-Iroquois-Ford Association of Realtors and the Woman’s Club of Kankakee.

Then, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 3, the candidates will participate in another forum at Kankakee Community College.

These events will present the opportunity to pose direct questions to be answered, and will dig deeper into the aspirations and goals of the candidates than any pile of campaign fliers can provide.

The election is little more than a month away, and it’s an important one that will go a long way in establishing the immediate future of our region. When the time comes to vote, be an informed voter by listening directly to what these women have to say.
