SAN ANTONIO (AP) _ Mia Hamm set up two goals and scored another Thursday night, leading the U.S. women’s national team to a 3-0 exhibition victory over Sweden.
The United States opened the scoring in the fourth minute when Hamm crossed to Shannon MacMillan, who poked the ball in from six yards out. In the 18th minute, Hamm made a slashing run and cracked the ball off the crossbar, with Tisha Venturini knocking in the rebound.
Hamm completed the scoring in the 62nd minute, leaping over goalkeeper Annelie Nilsson to head in Carin Gabarra’s cross.
U.S. goalkeeper Briana Scurry received strong defensive support and preserved her shutout in the 76th minute when she stopped Camilla Ackerfors on a breakaway.
The U.S. women are 4-1 in their tuneup games leading to the Atlanta Olympics. Sweden will be one of the eight teams at the Games, which for the first time will feature women’s soccer.
The United States and Sweden will again Saturday in Houston.
