Chad Rushing kicks off intimate concert series at LACA

As lakeshore residents brace for the impending arrival of fall, the Ludington Area Center for the Arts (LACA) is adding a new and intimate performance series to its roster of events to accompany the change of season.

The new Intimate Evening With concert series starts tonight in the main gallery at the arts center, 107 S. Harrison St. The show begins at 7 p.m. and will feature Ludington singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Chad Rushing.

Rushing has never been averse to trying new things. After attracting fans in the area with his explosive blues guitar solos, he expanded his horizons — and his instrumental repertoire — and began drumming for a country band, 100 Proof. He also participated in the Ludrock All-Stars concert during the summer, exposing himself to a new and different interactions with members of the audience.

He said he jumped at the opportunity to be part of what he called the “maiden voyage” of the new series.

“They asked me to do this a few months ago, and I thought it was a really neat idea,” Rushing said. “It gives fans an opportunity to see (musicians and artists) and get to know them a little better.”

Rushing said the setting of the gallery was a deliberate choice on behalf of LACA and the musicians who are participating.

“We toyed with the idea of having everyone up on the (performance hall) stage, but the main gallery is the most accessible large space in LACA,” he said.

He said the idea is to subvert the traditional notion of having the audience and the performers separated by a stage and a cordoned off area for fans.

“It’s a lot closer and more intimate, hence the name,” Rushing said.
