INDOT project near Creek Ridge Park in works
La PORTE — The La Porte Board of Commissioners met Aug. 1 to discuss new county business.
Among the items on the agenda, was consideration of an INDOT project at Creek Ridge Park to replace a culvert beneath I-94. To replace the culvert, INDOT needs to acquire about 1/20 of an acre of right of way on the sides of the culvert and ditch. Both the Commissioners and the La Porte County Parks Board voted to accept INDOT’s offer.
The Commissioners also approved a second flyover to gather new aerial pictures for the Beacon website now that flooding from heavy rains this past spring have receded. The flyover will be done by Pictometry International Corp., who have an existing agreement with the La Porte County Assessor’s office.
The Michigan City Courthouse Project is moving forward with approval of Tonn & Blank Construction for the Construction Manager contract. The decision to hire a construction manager stemmed largely from flaws in the work done on the La Porte Courthouse in 2007, when county government, under previous administrations, acted as construction manager during renovation.
“They will make sure it’s done exactly the way it’s supposed to be done and exactly the price it was agreed upon,” said Rich Mrozinski, commissioner and board president.
Commissioner Dr. Vidya Kora abstained from the vote because of his position on the Franciscan Health Board.
A consideration of approval for a revision to the drug screen policy for the county brought by Barb Mossman, head of HR, was tabled pending further review. The County Council has discussed bringing back the random drug screen policy and HR sees a need to revamp that policy. Commissioner Connie Gramarossa asked for time to go over the revisions and compare with the current document.
