Nova Star ferry service files for bankruptcy in Canada
PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A financially beleaguered ferry service that carried passengers between Maine and Nova Scotia has filed for bankruptcy in Canada.
The Portland Press Herald reports (http://bit.ly/1Qqbq6s ) documents filed in a Halifax, Canada, district court last week say Nova Star Cruises owes more than $15 million to creditors and identifies $142,000 in assets.
Portland is owed more than $77,000, mostly in unpaid port fees totaling almost $58,000. Several Maine companies are owed thousands of dollars.
The court notified creditors of the filing on Wednesday. The first creditors’ meeting is set for May 4 in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.
The ferry service had problems since its first season in 2014. It left Portland Harbor for good in December after a settlement was reached with its creditors and the ferry’s owner, Singapore Technologies.
