Deputies arrest mother of baby given to South Carolina woman

November 29, 2018

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) — Sheriff’s deputies in South Carolina have arrested the mother of a baby who was handed to another woman earlier this month.

Greenville Sheriff’s Lt. Ryan Flood said in a news release Wednesday that 31-year-old Jillene McMillan has been charged with child neglect.

Deputies say McMillan gave birth and handed the two-day old boy to Monique Yolanda Jackson, who took him to Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Jackson told deputies she was flagged down by a mother Nov. 10 and was handed a newborn. Jackson was later charged with filing a false police report.

The exchange did not comply with a state law that allows mothers to give babies away at safe locations. It was not known if McMillan has an attorney.

The infant was placed with the Department of Social Services.
