Mayville Piggly Wiggly becomes Blue Zones approved

September 17, 2018

MAYVILLE — Blue Zones Project Dodge County recognized Piggly Wiggly in Mayville as a Blue Zones Project approved grocery store Thursday.

Mayville Piggly Wiggly has made healthier choices easier for its customers. Kids under the age of 12 are treated to a free piece of fruit from the produce stand set up near the entrance while their parents are guided with floor decals and signage to the produce aisle where colorful and healthy choices abound. Locally grown produce is highlighted with shelf tags.

At the deli counter, customers can find grab-and-go fruit and vegetables that are labeled with the number of servings in the container to help with portion control. Fruit and vegetable sides are included in the meal deal with deli sandwiches made on whole grain bread. Because consuming a serving of nuts each day is a common practice in many of the original Blue Zones, the store makes it convenient to pick up individual serving sizes of packaged nuts at the deli counter. The deli also features a weekly Blue Zones inspired special with free samples for people to try.

To help customers learn more about making healthy choices, Mayville Piggly Wiggly hosted a grocery store tour and food demonstrations. Recipes and a list of commonly consumed foods in the original Blue Zones is in the store for customers to pick up and use as a resource while they shop.

Beverage coolers near the checkout have water on the top shelf, which is closer to eye level. The Blue Zones Project checkout lane is stocked with healthier impulse purchases that will keep you on track for better health and well-being.

“Healthy communities, healthy lifestyles, eating right, working out, doing God’s work; it is all really important. We only have this one life to live and we want to make it the healthiest we can,” said Curt Schmidt, owner of Mayville Piggly Wiggly.

Brought to Dodge County by Beaver Dam Community Hospitals, in collaboration with Sharecare, Inc. and Blue Zones, LLC, Blue Zones Project is a community-by-community well-being improvement initiative — designed to make healthy choices easier through sustainable changes to environment, policy and social networks.
