Syracuse’s Rosamond Gifford Zoo gets esteemed accreditation

October 5, 2018

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Syracuse’s Rosamond Gifford Zoo has again achieved accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

To meet association standards, an inspecting team of zoo and aquarium professionals observed all aspects of the zoo’s operation. That included animal care and welfare, keeper training, educational programs, conservation efforts, veterinary programs, financial stability, risk management and safety for visitors, staff and animals.

The AZA requires zoos and aquariums to go through the process every five years to receive accreditation. The Rosamond Gifford Zoo has been an accredited AZA member since 1987.

Founded in 1914 on four acres in the Tipperary Hill neighborhood on the west side of Syracuse, the zoo is now home to approximately 700 animals on 43 acres.
