Lawmakers push for more speed cameras in NYC
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Democrats in the New York state Senate are pushing to loosen restrictions on school speed cameras in New York City.
The lawmakers are proposing to lift a cap on the number and times in which the cameras can operate. Their bill would expand the number of school speed cameras allowed in the city from 140 to 290.
The Democrats discussed the bill Tuesday at the state Capitol and were joined by the father of Giovanni Ampuero, a 9-year-old boy who was killed in April after being struck by a car in Queens.
The Democrats’ proposal has been introduced in the Republican-led Senate but hasn’t been scheduled for a vote.
