Pirates fall at Rio; L-Cats cruise past Whippets

November 16, 2018

RIO — Senior point guard Jordyn Hutzler led all scorers with 29 points as Rio beat Waterloo’s girls basketball team 61-50 in the nonconference season opener for both teams on Tuesday.

Rio led 35-34 at halftime. Waterloo kept pace behind 10 first-half points from senior point guard Samantha Battenberg, seven points from senior guard/forward Brittney Limoseth and six points from sophomore forward Joslyn Wolff.

The Pirates opened the second half on a 7-0 run for a 41-35 lead, but the host Vikings erased a six-point deficit in the final 13 minutes behind Hutzler’s relentless attacks on the basket.

“We just didn’t respond well,” Waterloo girls basketball coach Gabe Haberkorn said. “They were getting after it and we weren’t responding to it. We were up by six, already in the bonus and couldn’t convert some free throws. We missed six in a row at one point and gave up a run. It is what it is.”

Battenberg led Waterloo with 19 points. Limoseth finished with eight. The Pirates shot 18-of-64 for the game — 14-of-48 from 2-point range and 4-of-16 from 3-point range.

“We left a lot of points on the board,” Haberkorn said. “The girls will keep working.”

Waterloo hosts Dodgeland on Thursday.

Brittney Fredrick had eight points and six rebounds to lead Hustisford.

“It was the first game of the season, and we knew were going to take our bumps and bruises early,” Hustisford girls basketball coach Mack McPherson said. “I thought we came out fairly decent in the first half. Then we let their best player (Prieve) get away from us. She hit her first four or five shots, then we turned the ball over 20 times in the first half.

“We weren’t doing a lot of things right, but we were only down 14. In the second half, we weren’t in synch. We were chasing the basketball. We weren’t running anything on offense. The game just literally got away from us, but we played all 12 players who were dressed and we had eight scorers, which was nice. We had some solid efforts from Brittney and Cassidy Ewert.”

Hustisford hosts Pardeeville on Thursday.
