Pioneers fall to Keyser
KEYSER, W.Va. — Missed opportunities get magnified in tight postseason games.
Wayne made five trips inside the Keyser 20-yard line Saturday afternoon and came away with only 8 points in falling, 28-8, to the host Golden Tornado in a Class AA football playoff game.
Keyser (9-2) advances to the Class AA quarterfinals. The Golden Tornado will play at Bluefield next.
The final game stats were closer than the scoreboard indicated. Keyser outgained the Pioneers by only 308 yards to 290 and Wayne finished with more first downs.
However the difference truly was the hosts ability to finish drives and to pop big plays to score.
Keyser quarterback Ryan Shoemaker ran for 116 yards, including a 70-yard touchdown in the second quarter. That run came after Reggie Redman caught a third down pass that was deflected, making a diving grab for the first down.
The series followed Wayne’s opening drive, where quarterback Gunner Harmon was stopped on fourth-amd-2 at the Keyser 3-yard line that was so close to the line to gain the referee had to squat down to look to determine it was short of the first down chain on the measurement.
Redman also picked off a pass on the goal line when Wayne had driven to the Keyser 9-yard line on the Pioneers’ second possession.
Wayne’s Michael Bartram scored on a 20-yard screen pass in the second quarter, cutting Keyser’s lead to 14-8 at halftime. But Wayne was stopped again on the first drive after halftime on fourth-and-2 at the Keyser 20.
Aaron Adkins ran for 70 yards on the loss for Wayne (8-3).
