British rugby league star Sinfield switches codes
LEEDS, England (AP) — Kevin Sinfield, one of Britain’s top rugby league players, will switch codes at the end of the season after agreeing to an 18-month deal with an English second-tier club in rugby union.
The 34-year-old Sinfield will end his 19-year association with Leeds Rhinos to play for Yorkshire Carnegie, which shares the same stadium in northern England.
Sinfield is fourth on the all-time list of point-scorers in rugby league, has made 40 international appearances for England and Britain, and has captained Leeds since 2003.
Sinfield said on Tuesday, “I never wanted to play against the Rhinos, and throughout my career I have always had an admiration for rugby union and wanted to challenge myself in that code.”
Yorkshire Carnegie is managed by Ian McGeechan, the former British and Irish Lions coach.
