Inmate attempts to escape from Mohave County Courthouse

May 1, 2019

An inmate attacked his detention officer as they were leaving the Mohave County Courthouse in Kingman, according to the Mohave County Sheriff’s Department.

A sheriff’s news release said Steven Ray Wilkinson, 39, of Bullhead City, lunged toward the officer in an attempt to take his keys as they were walking from the courthouse. The unidentified officer told deputies he was taking Wilkinson and another inmate to a transport van after court ended, when Wilkinson attempted to remove his vehicle keys from his belt. The officer positioned himself away from Wilkinson, who then lunged again and shoved the officer against the van. A struggle followed, and the officer held Wilkinson on the ground while he continued to resist, the news release said. The officer eventually used pepper spray in his attempt to subdue the inmate. The second inmate attempted to assist the officer in keeping Wilkinson on the ground until courthouse security staff arrived to help.

Wilkinson was restrained during the entire incident and the detention officer was not injured.

Wilkinson was taken back to Mohave County Jail, where he faces additional felony charges of aggravated assault on a correctional employee and escape.
