PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (AP) _ Scott Sheldon hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning Saturday as the Texas Rangers overcame a pair of home runs by Mo Vaughn to beat the Boston Red Sox 8-6.

Vaughn’s two-run homer off Bobby Witt and Reggie Jefferson’s solo shot put Boston ahead in the first. Troy O’Leary homered in the fourth off John Wetteland and Vaughn homered in the fifth off Roger Pavlik.

Witt allowed three runs and five hits in two innings.

Boston pitcher Chris Bosio, who missed last season with knee problems, left in the seventh inning after feeling pain in his pitching shoulder. He allowed two runs and retired just one batter.

Boston led 6-4 in the eighth when Lee Stevens hit an RBI double off John Wasdin, who replaced Bosio. Sheldon’s homer was the sixth in the Rangers’ first two fames.

Julio Santana got the victory. Brian Rose started for Boston and pitched three hitless innings.
