City Decorates Christmas Tree Ahead Of Parade
A Wilkes-Barre Public Works staffer maneuvers his basket Wednesday afternoon as he puts the lights on the Wilkes Barre Christmas tree on Public Square. Mayor Tony George said Assistant Fire Chief Damian Lendacky donated the Colorado blue spruce to the city in memory of his mother, Marie, who died of lung cancer a few days before Christmas in 2015, just a few days after she had turned 65. George said Lendacky and his mother had planted the tree when he was a little boy. Lendacky’s grandson, Mason Lehman, and Councilman Mike Belusko’s triplet grandsons, Brody, Logan and Conor Richardson, will light the tree in a ceremony immediately following the Santa Parade on Saturday. The parade is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. at South and South Main streets and will proceed to Public Square. City Director of Operations Butch Frati said the tree was erected on Friday. City employees began decorating it Wednesday and will finish up today.
