UNL Haskell Ag Lab staying open, lots in-store for the future
LINCOLN - Governor Pete Ricketts had originally proposed 4% budget cuts to the University of Nebraska, but has since dropped them down to 1%.
The 4% cuts would have closed UNL’s Haskell Agricultural Laboratory in Concord, but now the lab will be staying open.
Vice Chancellor for the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources Mike Boehm tells News Talk WJAG he recently conducted a listening tour in 25 counties, and made 35 stops.
Boehm says he heard four things loud and clear that helped them reassess their engagement strategy.
“First was a call for an education compact, number two was a lot of discussion around water quality, the third piece was a focus on workforce development, specifically in feedlots, and forth was lots of conversation about teaching people about where their food comes from.”
Boehm says they’re excited to work with communities to ensure their needs are being met today and into the future.
