Brazil police officer killed in drive-by shooting
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Rio de Janeiro’s police department says one officer has been killed and another injured in a drive-by shooting during a routine patrol.
In a statement Wednesday, the military police say men in a vehicle opened fire on the patrol car near a slum in the northern Rio neighborhood of Guadalupe.
The statement did not give the names of the officers or details on their injuries. A report on the G1 internet portal said the officer who died was shot in the head, while the other was hit in the shoulder.
Tuesday’s shooting was the second death of a Rio police officer in as many days. Drug trafficking gangs are increasingly attacking police who are trying to create permanent posts in many slums before the 2016 Rio Olympics.
