Orioles Trade Hammonds for Greene

August 10, 1998

BALTIMORE (AP) _ The Baltimore Orioles acquired third baseman-outfielder Willie Greene from the Cincinnati Reds on Monday for outfielder Jeffrey Hammonds.

Greene, 26, hit .270 with 14 homers and 49 RBIs this season after collecting 26 homers and 91 RBIs last season _ his best since entering the major leagues in 1992.

``Willie Greene gives us another solid left-handed hitter,″ said Orioles general manager Pat Gillick.

Gillick said Greene has the ability to play several positions, and will give manager Ray Miller more flexibility on the bench.

Greene was the Pittsburgh Pirates’ first round draft pick in 1989.

Hammonds has spent time on the disabled list this season, leaving him with just six homers and 28 RBIs. He hit 21 home runs in 1997.
