Brian Dean / For the Wayne County News The Wayne Pioneers take on Herbert Hoover during a statement away game Friday night.

WAYNE — The Pioneer’s will be back in Wayne Friday night hosting long time rival Chapmanville Regional after a statement win over Herbert Hoover 56-28.

Momentum shifts defined the first 13 minutes of Friday night’s game between Wayne and Herbert Hoover.

But once the Pioneers got it back, the Huskies had no way to slow Wayne down.

The visiting Pioneers outscored Herbert Hoover 30-7 over the middle two quarters, on their way to a 56-28 victory at foggy Joe Eddie Cowley Field.

Gunner Harmon completed 10-of-20 passes for 167 yards and a touchdown, but it was Wayne’s opportunistic defense that made the game a runaway.

The Pioneers (4-2) intercepted a pass and recovered three fumbles, including Isaac Dean’s 50-yard scoop and score. Wayne did not turn the ball over.

Dean also had a 30-yard touchdown run, continuing a penchant for big plays. The senior has scored six touchdowns of 30 or more yards on the season. He’s also had a kickoff return and a punt return for touchdown wiped out by penalty.

Michael Bartram ran for 80 yards and a score on nine carries, as the Pioneers rolled up 261 yards rushing on the night.

Herbert Hoover, tied the game at 14 with 11:07 left in the first half, when Rhett White lobbed a 4th and 27 pass into the arms of Nathan Harper, who broke a tackle and scored from 32 yards out.

Wayne then scored the next 36 points. Tanner Owens had a touchdown catch and an interception in the flurry that saw the game get out of hand.

The Pioneers will host Chapmanville Regional in a key Cardinal Conference battle Friday night.

Chapmanville Regional (4-2) had their open week Friday night.

The Tiger’s last matchup also came against Herbert Hoover in a 46-13 showdown.

Both of Chapmanville’s losses came in the first two games against rivals Sissonville and Poca.

Since the two losses, the Tigers have put on a four game win streak scoring over 20 points per game while not allowing more than 14 points.

Last season, Wayne got the better of Chapmanville on the road 14-12.
