Bolivia asks for friendly in Nigeria to be postponed

March 18, 2015

LA PAZ, Bolivia (AP) — Bolivia’s soccer federation wants its friendly match in Nigeria scheduled for March 26 to be postponed because of the African nation’s internal conflict.

In a news conference Wednesday, federation president Carlos Chavez specifically mentioned the extremist group Boko Haram as a concern.

The federation issued a statement Tuesday seeking the postponement to “preserve the physical integrity of the players, coaching staff” and others who would travel.

Boko Haram’s six-year insurgency has claimed thousands of lives, and the group recently declared allegiance to the extremist group Islamic State.
