Unite’s Big Red Wins Calder Race
MIAMI (AP) _ Unite’s Big Red, a 10-1 shot, edged Fig Fest by a nose Saturday to win the $193,575 Miami Breeders’ Cup Handicap for older horses on the grass at Calder.
Copy Editor, the even-money favorite, finished in a dead heat for third with Ensign Ray, 1 1/4 lengths behind the top two.
The winner, ridden by Eduardo Nunez, ran one mile in 1:36 3-5 and paid $22.20, $10.60 and $4.60. Fig Fest returned $15.40 and $5.80. Ensign Ray was worth $3.20 to show and Copy Editor was worth $2.20.
Auroral opened a two-length lead on the turn, with Ensign Ray fourth, Unite’s Big Red fifth and Fig Fest sixth. Copy Editor was eighth. Into the far turn, Auroral led by a length over Laughing Dan. Ensign Ray was third on the inside.
Ensign Ray took the lead from Auroral inside the three-sixteenths pole, but in the final sixteenth Unite’s Big Red made a strong move on the outside.
Unite’s Big Red, a 4-year-old Florida-bred son of Unite owned by Breakaway Racing Stable and Dream Catcher Inc., has won seven of 22 starts and $357,055. This year, he’s won two of five, the other the Americana Handicap at Calder July 4.
