CHICAGO (AP) _ Rookie Corey Patterson hit an inside the park home run in the seventh inning Sunday for the Chicago Cubs.

Patterson recorded the first Cubs inside the park home run since Sammy Sosa did so May 26, 1997, at Pittsburgh. It was the first at Wrigley Field by a Cub since Ryne Sandberg accomplished the feat July 27, 1991, off Atlanta's John Smoltz.

With one out in the seventh off St. Louis' Alan Benes, Patterson hit the first pitch down the right-field line. The ball rolled under the padding along the right-field wall and Cardinals right fielder J.D. Drew was slow to find it before throwing home.

Patterson slid headfirst and easily beat the throw.
