Woman Charged in Deaths of Sons 20 Years Ago, Grandson Last Spring
MONTICELLO, Ind. (AP) _ A woman has been charged with suffocating her two sons more than 20 years ago and killing her 2-year-old grandson in the same way last spring.
Elizabeth Shanklin, 48, was arrested Thursday on three counts of murder following a grand jury’s indictment. She was being held without bond.
Police say Shanklin suffocated Gregory Debish Jr. on May 10 while he was staying at her home in Buffalo, about 90 miles northwest of Indianapolis. Her daughter, who is the boy’s mother, is in jail for arson.
During the investigation into Gregory’s death, residents told police about the suspicious deaths of Shanklin’s infant sons in 1974.
``There was never any criminal investigation done 20 years ago,″ prosecutor Robert Guy said. ``There were some people who were very suspicious as to the cause of death, especially after the second child of hers died three months after the first child died.″
Gregory’s father, who was not married to Shanklin’s daughter, said he was comforted by the arrest.
``She is a violent woman. I have witnessed rages,″ he said.
