Phoenix shut out Wisconsin Dells to close out regular season

October 13, 2018

WISCONSIN DELLS — Alex Lawrence and Lucas Martin each scored two goals for Luther Prep’s boys soccer team in a 6-0 Capitol Conference victory over Wisconsin Dells on Wednesday.

The Phoenix owned possession for the first 10 minutes, but the stingy Dells’ defense kept them at bay. This all changed twelve minutes into the game when junior Isaias Santos sent a perfect through ball to a sprinting Martin. who assisted Lawrence to start the scoring.

About ten minutes later, Senior leader Xander Heiman never gave up on a play and was rewarded as the goalkeeper fumbles the loose ball which Heiman finished on target.

After the halftime whistle, the two goal leaders on the team took over the game when the Phoenix needed it most. Lawrence scored just three minutes after the break on a hustle play through the defense.

Not much longer after that, Martin scored twice off of quality assists from Santos and Owen Ernest. The assist from Santos was a pretty header score into the side-net by Martin.

Ernest also joined the scoring in the 65th minute to close out the final score of 6-0.

Luther Prep (14-2-1, 8-1 in conference) is now done with the regular season as SWCHA cancelled their game scheduled for today.

Luther Prep awaits its playoff seeding fate as the meeting is on Sunday.

“While we have some things to clean up until we can say that we played Luther Prep soccer, we still won and all of the guys played some minutes which is always fantastic,” Luther Prep boys soccer coach Marty Pagel said.

“We will head to the practice pitch to clean up to get to where we need to go for the playoffs, but credit these guys for the win.”
