Trial of suspect in Ipswich restaurant slaying starts
SALEM, Mass. (AP) — The lawyer for a man charged with killing a popular Ipswich restaurant owner during a robbery attempt says although his client was present, he did not participate in the slaying.
Cheng Sun faces a murder charge in the September 2011 death of 62-year-old Shui Keung “Tony” Woo inside the Majestic Dragon restaurant.
Prosecutors say Sun and two other men intended to rob the restaurant. Woo, after a long day, often slept in the restaurant rather than driving home to Quincy.
Authorities say Woo was bludgeoned, stabbed and tied up in an attempt to get him to disclose the combination of the safe, but ultimately the suspects left empty-handed.
The Salem News reports that Sun’s attorney said Tuesday his client did not know Woo was inside and wanted no part of the violence.
