LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) _ Randy Gatewood caught three touchdown passes, the last a 3-yarder from Jared Brown with 4:57 remaining, and Marvin Robinson made a game-saving defensive play in the final seconds as Nevada-Las Vegas beat New Mexico State 31-27 Saturday night in the Big West Conference.

Gatewood’s third scoring catch of the night capped a drive that covered 90 yards and took 19 plays. But the Rebels (3-2, 2-0 Big West) still had to stop a New Mexico State team seeking its third straight come-from-behind victory in the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Cody Ledbetter led New Mexico State (2-3, 1-1) on 83- and 95- yard last-minute drives in closing-minute victories against Texas-El Paso and Arkansas State, respectively, in the past two weeks.

With Ledbetter at the controls, the Aggies reached a first-and-goal at the UNLV 10 with just over a minute left. A holding penalty pushed the Aggies back to the 18, however, and Ledbetter’s 10-yard pass to Brian Pizula and a 4-yard run left the Aggies 4 yards away with 42 seconds remaining.

After Ledbetter threw incomplete on third down, Robinson broke up the fourth-down pass intended for Lucious Davis in the end zone.

Gatewood, who set a major-college record by catching 23 passes against Idaho two weeks ago, caught six for 80 yards Saturday night.
