Houston back to winning ... Twins keep pace in AL Central with win over 0s ... Bryan brothers out
TORONTO (AP) — Houston quickly returned to its winning ways. The Astros crushed the Blue Jays, 12-2, last night as leadoff hitter George Springer went 4-for-4 with five RBIs and four runs scored. Springer hit a three-run homer and a solo shot for Houston, which also got round-trippers from Carlos Correa and Evan Gattis (GAT’-ihs). Charlie Morton was sharp over six innings, giving up just one run and four hits as the Astros stretched their lead in the AL West to 16 ½ games over the Angels and Rangers.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Twins trailed 6-0 before Kennys Vargas and Chris Gimenez drove in two runs to lead Minnesota’s comeback in a 9-6 comeback against the Orioles. Minnesota took the lead with a five-run fifth as Vargas hit a two-run double and scored on an RBI single by Gimenez. The Birds wasted Manny Machado’s two home runs and four RBIs. The Twins remain just a game and a half behind Cleveland in the AL Central.
PHOENIX (AP) — The Diamondbacks doubled up the Reds, 6-3 behind Zack Greinke’s seven shutout innings. Greinke gave up just four hits and improved to 11-4 overall this season, including a 9-0 mark at home. Paul Goldschmidt banged out his 20th homer to help Arizona bounce back after being swept by the Dodgers. They now trail L.A. in the NL West by five and a-half games.
DENVER (AP) — Nolan Arenado (ar-eh-NAH’-doh) was the hitting star in the Rockies’ 12-4 thrashing of the White Sox, going 3-for-5 with a two-run homer and three RBIs. D.J. LeMahieu (leh-MAY’-hyoo) and Charlie Blackmon also homered in support of German Marquez, who gave up nine hits but only three runs over seven innings. Colorado is 4-4 since its eight-game losing streak.
LONDON (AP) — The Bryan brothers won’t be reclaiming their Wimbledon doubles championship this year. Bob and Mike Bryan lost in the second round today to Marcin Matkowski of Poland and Max Mirnyi of Belarus 6-3, 7-5, 6-4. The Bryan twins won at the All England Club in 2006, 2011 and 2013 and reached the finals on four other occasions. But, they have not won a Grand Slam title since the U.S. Open in 2014.
