Jig Jog open to register, race volunteers needed

February 8, 2019

Residents are welcome to celebrate the end of winter and spring to life at the Watertown Jig Jog Walk/Run, scheduled for Saturday, March 16.

Over 500 walkers and runners will experience a winding 5K course through historic Watertown neighborhoods that includes a rest stop at the Octagon House.

The event begins and ends at the Watertown Senior and Community Center with the finish line on the riverwalk. This year’s ambassador and official starter is Wayne Larrivee, voice of the Green Bay Packers.

People are encouraged to get a group together and walk. Walkers are eligible to participate in a special scavenger hunt and win prizes.

Register before March 3 to receive a long sleeve T-shirt, a surprise item and be eligible for great raffle prizes.

Valuable gift cards will be given out to those who dress up to show Irish spirit. Live and recorded music will be played throughout the event for extra motivation.

Overall and age group winners will receive unique trophies. The one-half mile kid’s run, led by a leprechaun, will follow the 5K event.

Because the event takes place in residential areas of the city, course volunteers are needed. For those who plan not to participate in the run or walk to please consider becoming a volunteer.

Adults and responsible teenagers are needed to stand at their assigned intersection to help runners get across the street safely, and cheer the runners and walkers on. Volunteer time will take up to one hour.

All proceeds go to the Educational Foundation of Watertown, which distributed over $23,000 last year to local public and private classrooms.

This year the Jig Jog will also contribute $1,000 to the library building fund.

All school parents, students and staff are encouraged to sign up and try to win the “challenge cup” for their school. The school with the most participation will win $250 for their PTO.

To encourage school participation this year we are offering a special family registration rate.
