Montpelier applies for grant to study light rail service
MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — Montpelier has applied for a grant that would study launching a light rail service in Vermont.
The Planning and Development Department prepared and submitted the $250,000 grant application to the Federal Transit Administration Friday. The Times Argus reports it is currently not known when the FTA will respond.
The application is a partnership with the Central Vermont Regional Planning Commission to help identify opportunities for a passenger rail corridor on an existing rail line linking Barre, Berlin and Montpelier.
The planning process will include a feasibility study looking at the administrative and financial capacity of Green Mountain Transit as operator, an economic impact study and an infrastructure needs assessment.
