ROME (AP) _ Venus Williams’ status for the French Open is ``probable.″
Williams, who pulled out of this week’s Italian Open after injuring her right wrist, was examined by an orthopedic specialist on Thursday and received a favorable prognosis.
``(Venus) has been diagnosed with a ligament sprain of the right wrist,″ WTA trainer Philippa Stewart said in a statement Friday. ``She has been advised to continue with physiotherapy treatment and start practice next Monday. Her present status to play Roland Garros is probable.″
Williams lost her No. 1 ranking Friday when Jennifer Capriati advanced to the semifinals at the Foro Italico with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Amelie Mauresmo.
``I don’t think she’s going to miss the French,″ Serena Williams, Venus’ sister, said Thursday.
The French Open begins May 27.
