Jean Markel Will Add Dancing to Her List of Local Accomplishments
Jean Markel soon will join her husband as a veteran of Dancing With the Broomfield Stars. Bill Markel danced in the first-ever Dancing With the Broomfield Stars event.
The Markels always have taken an active part in the Broomfield Community Foundation, but Markel said she “never dreamed she would be called up at her age.
“But how can you say no when a good friend like Jeff Taylor asks you?“she said.
She joked that she’s having second thoughts about him now.
Markel graduated from Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois and then worked in dietetics at a Chicago hospital while Bill was in medical school at the University of Illinois Medical School.
After graduation, they came to Aurora’s Fitzsimons Army Medical Center for her husband’s internship, and then spent two years at Fort Ord in California.
Having fallen in love with Colorado when they were at Fitzsimons, the Markels decided to return, and discovered Broomfield needed another doctor.
Bill Markel founded Broomfield Family Practice, which they said kept them busy, along with raising four children.
The two lived in town ten years and then moved to a farm where they baled hay, raised 4-H cattle and boarded horses.
“Many of our young girls had a drill team and would go the county fair,” she said. “What fun they had with those horses. We had a huge vegetable garden and the surplus went to (Broomfield) FISH.”
The Markels enjoy skiing, camping, biking, white water rafting and scuba diving. In retirement, they have spent time on cruise ships while Bill worked as the ship’s doctor.
Markel will dance with Roberto Munoz of Colorado Conservatory of Dance. Munoz spends his time traveling and teaching dance in other countries.
