SALT LAKE CITY (AP) _ Chris Mendonca threw two touchdown passes to Eddie Johnson and Scott Lieber kicked three field goals as Utah defeated New Mexico 24-20 in a Western Athletic Conference season opener Saturday night.

Trailing 14-13 late in the third quarter, Mendonca found Johnson for a 13- yard touchdown to cap an 80-yard drive. He then found Steve Peterson for a 2- point conversion.

Lobo quarterback Barry Garrison completed a 33-yard scoring pass to Terance Mathis early in the fourth period to pull the Lobos within 21-20, but the conversion kick by Rick Walsh was wide left.

Lieber’s third field goal, a 38-yarder, gave the Utes a four-point advantage with 8:32 remaining.

The Lobos made it inside the Utah 40 twice late in the game, but couldn’t score. Garrison completed a 36-yard pass to Mathis to the Utah 25 as the gun sounded.

Lieber kicked 25-yard field goals in the first and third quarters while Mendonca threw a 3-yard scoring pass to Johnson in the second period.

Garrison threw 28 yards to John Duff in the first quarter and tossed a 39- yarder to Mathis in the second as the Lobos led 14-10 at halftime.
