Man Shot After Telling Mother He Would Die That Night

February 19, 1992

PITTSBURGH (AP) _ A man tried to commit suicide by shooting twice at a police officer, hoping police would kill him, authorities said. The officer shot and critically wounded the man.

Joseph Viszneki, 36, of the Pittsburgh suburb of Penn Hills, was listed in critical condition Wednesday at Presbyterian University Hospital.

Officer Jeffrey Perz, 29, a 7-year veteran of the Penn Hills police department, was not hurt, Detective Ronald Laufer said.

Viszneki told his mother late Tuesday he was tired of not having money or a job, and planned to shoot policemen as a way to end his life, Laufer said.

″Tonight is the night I’m going up to the police station and fire a few shots, and the cops will shoot me,″ Laufer quoted Viszneki as saying. ″This is my night, I’m going to die.″

After her son left the house, Mrs. Viszneki called police to warn them her son was on his way to the station, Laufer said.

Perz confronted Viszneki about a mile from the station and the gun battle erupted, Laufer said.
