NEW YORK (AP) _ The Dow Jones industrials cleared 6,500 Monday just six weeks after the first close above 6,000, extending a stock market rally based on hopes of sustainable, noninflationary economic growth.

Broader market indexes also set records.

The Dow Jones industrials rose 76.03 to close at 6,547.79, bringing its gain for the year to nearly 28 percent. It was the 12th record close in the past 14 sessions for Wall Street's best-known indicator.
