Baraboo police warn citizens of recent telephone fraud attempts by callers claiming to be police

May 25, 2019

Citizens should be vigilant and cautious of fraudulent phone calls, Baraboo police say.

In a Facebook post on Friday, the Baraboo Police Department said a citizen informed them of a telephone fraud attempt in which a police department’s number shows up on caller identification and the callers identify themselves as members of the local police.

The callers reportedly have been telling residents they are investigating computer scams and needs to gain remote access to citizens’ computers to help prevent crimes.

“This is clearly a scam,” the department said in a statement. “Our department does not contact citizens in such a manner.”

Baraboo police say if citizens receive similar calls, they should immediately hang up.

“We ask that you be extremely cautious whenever asked about gaining access to your computer, as this is a new trend for fraud attempts,” the department said.
