Va. Doctor Sentenced for Stalking
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) _ A former neurologist who concocted a batch of poison, donned a disguise and stalked a former boss who gave him a bad evaluation was sentenced Monday to 10 years in prison.
Dr. Ray W. Mettetal Jr. was convicted of possessing a deadly chemical with the intention of poisoning Dr. George Allen, the neurosurgery chairman at Vanderbilt University Medical School in Nashville, Tenn.
Mettetal admitted putting on a bushy, ill-fitting wig and fake beard in 1995 and traveling to Allen’s office with a large syringe.
His lawyers argued the syringe was filled with saline solution and the poison never left a storage locker in Harrisonburg, where Mettetal was in private practice.
At his July trial, Mettetal said he was only playing out a harmless fantasy to vent his anger at Allen for destroying his dream of becoming a neurosurgeon.
Mettetal faces trial in Tennessee on an attempted murder charge.
