Weapon cache blast, attack kill 13 in Libya
TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) — Libyan security officials say an explosion at a weapon cache in a southern air base and an attack on checkpoint in an eastern city have killed 13 people.
The officials said that the two incidents took place Thursday. In the southern town of Barek al-Shati, they said a storeroom housing tank ammunition at an air base exploded, killing 10 and wounding 20. It was not immediately clear what caused the explosion. One official said a group of looters were trying to smuggle the ammunition out at the time of the blast.
In Benghazi, officials said gunmen attacked a checkpoint manned by marines, killing three and wounding three.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to journalists.
