Michu gets 1st call-up for Spain to replace Villa
MADRID (AP) — Spain coach Vicente del Bosque has called up Swansea forward Michu for his first international match to replace the injured David Villa.
Michu will get a chance to make his debut for the world champions when they play Belarus next Friday and Georgia four days later in qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup.
Villa was dropped from the squad earlier Sunday after he aggravated a case of arthritis in his left ankle during Atletico Madrid’s 2-1 win over Celta Vigo and asked to be substituted in the second half.
Del Bosque already replaced the injured Raul Albiol with defender Inigo Martinez on Saturday.
Spain is joint top of European Group I, level with France on points but with a game in hand.
