Lamar fans, players and marching band members prep for Homecoming 2018

September 18, 2018

It’s not just the football team braving the heat to get ready for Lamar University’s homecoming game. Members of the Cardinals’ marching band — billed as the Showcase of Southeast Texas — took to the practice field Monday afternoon, a day when temperatures reached a sweltering 97 degrees.

Fan and student events are planned throughout the week will include a pep rally and bonfire on campus Friday night before Saturday’s pregame tailgate and parade. The footballers will then kick off their 2018 homecoming game at 6 p.m. against Southeastern Louisiana at Provost Umphrey Stadium.

Although Lamar coach Mike Schultz said he wants his players to participate in the homecoming activities, he needs them focused and prepared come game day.

“Our university does a great job of orchestrating all kinds of different events that will happen this week, and I want (the players) to enjoy that,” Schultz said during his weekly news conference. “I just need to make sure that when they come through those doors into the facility (on Saturday), all that stuff stays behind them.”
