Tour de Tech makes a stop at Aiken Technical College on Tuesday

October 3, 2018

S.C. Technical College System President Tim Hardee biked 70 miles Tuesday to visit Aiken Technical College.

Hardee is currently doing Tour de Tech, an event that has him biking to technical colleges across the state. So far Hardee has biked 400 miles. Aiken Tech was the seventh stop on Hardee’s adventure.

When he has visited all 16 technical colleges on his tour, he will have biked 800 miles.

“The idea behind this was really two-fold,” Hardee said while speaking at Aiken Tech. “The first was to promote the tech system across the state of South Carolina… the second reason for Tour de Tech was our students.”

Hardee said the idea for Tour de Tech came from his son, who took a trip to California and spent five months running back across the county.

Hardee was greeted by supporters and employees of Aiken Tech when he arrived around 4 p.m. Tuesday. After he and his wife crossed the finish line, Hardee was presented with a surprise medal for reaching Aiken during Tour de Tech.

Speakers at the event touched on concerns about students not being able to afford a college education.

During the event, a check was presented to Aiken Technical College for $5,250. The money will help fund scholarship programs to help students pay tuition.

“There will be a student that will not only be enrolled and be able to pay their tuition, but one day will have a great job… But we have to get them in the door first,” Hardee said.
