Riley Misses Heat Game at Atlanta
ATLANTA (AP) _ Miami Heat coach Pat Riley was not with the team for Tuesday night’s game against the Atlanta Hawks as he remained in upstate New York with his ailing mother.
Assistant coach Ron Rothstein filled in for Riley.
Mary Riley, 96, still lives in the Schenectady, N.Y., area where Pat Riley grew up. The team announced the coach’s departure about an hour after Sunday’s 117-93 loss to the Chicago Bulls.
Rothstein was unsure if Riley will coach the team in Wednesday night’s final regular season game at Boston.
Rothstein said he talked with Riley on Tuesday.
``We talked about certain things we want to get done tonight, who we want to play, the starting lineup, who’s out, obviously, and that kind of stuff,″ Rothstein said. ``That was it.″
With Miami locked in as the No. 2 seed in the playoffs, Rothstein said the team would rely on backups against the Hawks. Shaquille O’Neal, Dwayne Wade and Gary Payton were listed as inactive for the game.
