Toledo 71, Kent 67

KENT, Ohio (AP) _ Craig Thames scored 18 points, including a crucial go-ahead shot with 41 seconds left, to lead Toledo past Kent, 71-67, Saturday in the Mid-American Conference.

The Rockets and the Golden Flashes are both 1-3 in the conference.

The score was tied 11 times in the second half, the last time at 66 when Kent’s Nate Reinking, the game’s top scorer with 22 points, made the first of two free throws with 55 seconds left. He also made the second to put Kent ahead by a point.

Toledo (7-5) went back ahead when Thames sank a short jumper in the lane. Thames added a free throw with 26 seconds left and Scoop Williams (17 points and 12 rebounds) added two free throws with nine seconds left.

Kent (4-8) began the game as if Toledo was overmatched. Kent led 8-0 about four minutes into the game on a Reinking jumper. Thames made a free throw finally put the Rockets on the board after 5:06 had elapsed. Casey Shaw’s layup 41 seconds later was Toledo’s first basket.

Kent led 25-18 with 5:41 left in the opening period before Bob Krahulik, who scored 15 for Toledo, came off the bench to help spark a rally that left the score tied at 31 at halftime.
