Wilder And Wolf Advance In USTA 35 Championship
SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) _ Top-ranked Val Wilder of Springfield, Mass., continued his drive for a second straight title in the USTA National Men’s 35 Grass Court championship with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 victory Wednesday over Jeff Thomas of Niantic, Conn.
Second-seeded Marty Wolf of Cincinnati joined Wilder in the quarterfinals by outlasting Rusty Wright of Pelham Park, N.Y., 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 at the Meadow Club. Lior Rusinek of Columbus, Ohio, upset No. 3 Andre Dupre of Westhampton, N.Y., 7-5, 6-4.
In other matches Wednesday, Hans Carlson of Richardson, Texas, seeded fourth, beat Alan Gold of Santa Barbara, Calif., 6-3, 6-3; Neil Levinson of Santa Monica, Calif., outlasted Jacob Kreimer of Danbury, Conn., 7-6 (10-8), 6-2; and David Kramer of East Hanover, N.J., survived a 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 match against Adam Rosen of Woodbury, N.Y.
Also, Andres Fanjul of Palm Beach, Fla., rallied for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Tres Cushing of Colleyville, Texas, and Alex Dias of Rye, N.Y., rallied for a 6-7 (7-9), 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) win over Ken Barnas of La Plata, Md.
