Three Hurt When Bridge Walkway Collapses; Officer Also Treated
KENT, Ohio (AP) _ A pedestrian walkway on a bridge collapsed Saturday night, injuring three people who plunged 25 feet to the banks of the Cuyahoga River, police said.
A police officer investigating the 7 p.m. accident suffered chest pains and was taken to Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna along with the three pedestrians, said police officer James Owens.
Frances Chandler, an emergency room nurse at the hospital, said she could not disclose patients’ conditions.
Police at the scene did not believe the injuries were life-threatening, Owens said. A dog who fell along with the people was also injured and was taken to an animal hospital, he said.
Although the two-lane roadway remained intact, it closed to vehicles, Owens said.
The cause of the collapse of the 75-foot-long walkway attached to the bridge remained under investigation. Portage County engineer Leroy Satrom said the 20-year-old bridge was deteriorating and had been scheduled for replacement.
