Attorney general’s office probes fatal shooting by trooper

September 28, 2018

STANFORD, N.Y. (AP) — The New York attorney general’s office is investigating the fatal shooting of a restaurant owner by a state trooper during a confrontation outside the businessman’s Hudson Valley eatery.

State police say troopers responded Tuesday morning to a 911 call reporting an intoxicated man with a knife menacing a woman outside the Coyote Flaco Restaurant in Stanford in Dutchess County.

Officials say 41-year-old Jaime Lopez failed to follow orders from the troopers and made an aggressive movement toward them. Police say a trooper shot Lopez. He died at a Poughkeepsie hospital.

State police are investigating along with Attorney General Barbara Underwood’s office, which is authorized to investigate shooting deaths of unarmed people by police. It can also investigate cases involving questions whether someone was armed and dangerous before being shot.
