Talks to keep Ronaldo at Barcelona break down
MADRID, Spain (AP) _ A breakdown in what was to have been routine final discussions today created doubt about the multimillion dollar contract extension FC Barcelona had offered Brazilian soccer star Ronaldo.
``The talks are technically broken down,″ Barcelona spokesman Domenec Garcia told national radio, adding that for the moment there were ``insuperable″ differences between both sides.
Representatives of the 20-year-old forward, world soccer Player of the Year in 1996, failed to show for a midday meeting.
Garcia declined to give details about what had led to the breakdown or when talks might resume.
``The negotiations are not completely ruptured, just technically,″ said Garcia. ``with some goodwill, they still may resume.″
Ronaldo’s representatives and Barcelona chairman Jose Luis Nunez said Tuesday they had reached agreement to extend Ronaldo’s contract by two years to 2006 and to raise his annual salary to $3.4 million after taxes from $1.7.
