‘Cyber Strike’ Hits Belgian Portal
ANTWERP, Belgium (AP) _ Personnel at the Belgian portal of the Italian-owned World Online internet-provider staged a ``cyber strike″ Thursday to protest the expected layoff of 45 of the 85 employees at the company’s offices in Antwerp.
The Belgian site was not being updated with news and ``this strike will continue until management is ready to make concessions,″ and provide adequate layoff compensation, said Frank Roosen, the site’s editor in chief.
World Online, which claims 4.2 million subscribers, has sites in 15 countries in Europe and elsewhere. It was launched in the Netherlands in 1994 and purchased last November by Italian internet service provider Tiscali SpA.
