New Head of Soviet Forces in East Germany
BERLIN (AP) _ Gen. Boris Vassilyevitch Snetkov has been named to head Soviet forces stationed in East Germany, the official news agency ADN reported Tuesday.
Snetkov, 62, was received by East German leader Erich Honecker when the Soviet general arrived in East Berlin on Tuesday, the news agency said.
He succeeds Valery Alexandrowitch Belikov, who died last month at age 62.
Snetkov becomes the 16th person to hold the position since the end of World War II.
The Soviet General Staff headquarters is located in Wuensdorf, about 12 miles south of East Berlin.
Western experts estimate there are about 400,000 Soviet troops in East Germany, the largest Soviet military contingent in any foreign country.
