Big Y, Red Cross partner for disaster relief
Big Y World Class Markets are partnering with the American Red Cross to raise donations for those affected by the Merrimack Valley fires and explosions, Hurricane Florence, and other disasters.
Starting Wednesday and continuing through Sept. 29, Big Y customers and employees will have the opportunity to donate to American Red Cross disaster relief at all Big Y locations throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut. Donation containers will be available at all Big Y registers.
“The Red Cross is grateful for the support of Big Y World Class Markets,” said Mario Bruno, CEO, American Red Cross Connecticut and Rhode Island Region in a news release. “This campaign will enable the Red Cross to aid in the recovery of those impacted by these recent disasters across the country. The outpouring of support we have seen over the years from Big Y employees and their customers has been tremendous.”
After an unprecedented multiple-explosion event in the Merrimack Valley, hundreds of American Red Cross volunteers are working alongside partners to make sure those affected have a safe place to stay, food to eat and a shoulder to lean on during this challenging time. As of Friday, the Red Cross provided close to 400 overnight stays across four evacuation centers, and with the help of partners served well over 1,500 meals and over 5,000 snacks and water.
The Red Cross continues to work around the clock to do all it can to provide shelter, food, comfort and other emergency support to victims of Hurricane Florence. More than 15,000 people sought refuge in more than 150 Red Cross and community shelters across the impacted region Sunday night. Working with partners, the Red Cross has served 150,700 meals and snacks. About 3,000 Red Cross disaster workers from all over the country, including 74 from the Connecticut and Rhode Island region, have been mobilized to help shelter, feed and support people affected by Florence, along with more than 130 emergency response vehicles and more than 70 trailers of equipment and supplies, including ready-to-eat meals and enough cots and blankets for more than 100,000 people.
Big Y, its customers and employees have a strong tradition of supporting those in need through the American Red Cross. Past relief campaigns include the 2004 Tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, and the earthquakes in Japan, Haiti and Nepal.
Overall, the 10-plus-year partnership has raised over $1.5 million to support both international and domestic disasters.
